Trace Tech ID Solutions has partnered with Blue Spark Technologies, a supplier of thin, flexible, eco-friendly printed batteries, to develop new battery-assisted passive (BAP) RFID temperature sensor solutions for use in a host of industries and applications. Trace Tech will combine Blue Spark’s printed batteries with its automated smart label production capabilities to produce disposable RF enabled time-temperature monitoring smart labels.
The BAP RFID temperature sensing tags can be used on cases, pallets, containers and even individual packages of perishable foods such as meat, fish, frozen and dairy products. They can also be used with temperature-sensitive chemicals, as well as pharmaceuticals, such as vaccines and biologicals. Because the embedded tags are EPC Gen2 compliant, the RFID enabled smart labels can allow real-time status monitoring and communication with the host system through the existing RFID infrastructure.
“The availability of single use RF enabled temperature monitors, represents a paradigm shift in cool and cold supply chain applications,” commented Trace Tech ID’s general manager, Carlos Llorca, “Blue Spark’s printed batteries provide the quality, reliability, and flexibility needed for robust smart label technology.”
John Gannon, Blue Spark President and CEO, said, “The combination of Trace Tech’s RFID enabled smart label technology with a sensor and a printed battery can offer food, pharmaceutical and chemical processors, and their logistics providers, a revolutionary breakthrough in cold chain monitoring. We are pleased to be partnering with Trace Tech to further develop these solutions.”
Trace Tech’s BAP RFID temperature monitor, “DBT Cold Chain,” features immediate temperature monitoring as well as the ability to monitor temperature over time using its internal real-time clock. Using the monitoring function, the label can continuously monitor temperatures through the entire supply chain logistics cycle. With this feature, users have the ability to set alarms based on high and low temperature excursions for user defined periods of time.
