Saft Selected for Lithium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System in Glendale, California

November 30, 2017 | News Brief | Saft’s Intensium Max lithium-ion (Li-ion) containerized energy storage system was selected by Skylar Resources to provide black-start capability at the Grandview Substation in Glendale, Calif. The new battery energy storage system (BESS) will also enable local generators to be started in the event of an unplanned outage.

With near-instantaneous ability to respond to changes in load on the transmission network, this scalable project will enable Glendale Water & Power (GWP) to adjust the system accordingly for future energy needs, enhancing Glendale’s electric reliability.  The BESS is also designed to support integration of renewable resources, compensating for their inherent variability.

BESS solutions like those commissioned on Glendale’s Grandview Substation are at the forefront of energy storage trends. It is estimated the energy storage market in the US alone will increase to $2.5 billion by 2022. Globally, 2016 broke records for energy storage deployments, and researchers anticipate the market will grow nearly 50 percent in 2017.
